If a flood, earthquake, or a leaking municipal pipe in your

basement were to damage your home, would your

homeowners insurance cover it? If you said “yes,” you

According to a survey of homeowners conducted by the

National Association of Insurance Commissioners, one third

of the people surveyed through their homeowners policy

covered flood insurance. Slightly over half of the

respondents thought they would be covered in the event

that water lines broke, and more than a third felt assured

that coverage would be offered for earthquake damage.

The fact is that 90% of natural disasters are accompanied

by some form of flooding for which homeowners must

pursue coverage.
